Hickman, resides in Memphis (wrote a great book about Faulkner; see the book page @ SRS), and I also lived in the south for a few years. I understand the traditions you speak of, Kate. And I did my grad work in sociology, so these social customs your write of -- so embedded in the culture -- are fascinating. It makes me wonder why the Italian side of my family was so derelict in the food department during funerals. Normally Italian food is such a big thing, yet at funerals, food was only served at home after the burial and it was mostly simple sandwich kind of stuff and store bought cake and cookies. Ours, St Catherine's, has always had a catering theme, although the days of preparing wedding receptions are long gone. However, if a section member or her spouse or significant other dies, the women pull out all stops and prepare a festive funeral reception. Tea sandwiches and other savories, sweets, coffee and tea and wine are served on freshly polished silver urns and platters adorned with fresh flowers. Friends and family linger and talk, and there is usually a lot of laughing along with tears.

I love that Lyle Lovett song :-)Susan Tinerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11900811284963063686noreply@blogger.com
